We had a wonderful and talented blog writer stay with us at The Hudson in our two bedroom display home last weekend. Keira Anne, editor of Vancouver Island Blog, has written a fabulous article about her experience and we are excited to share it with you. Please check out her blog:
http://www.keira-anne.com/2011/08/15/the-hudson-reviving-a-victoria-legacy/

Thank you again to Keira Anne for staying with us, and writing her story about The Hudson. It was a great experience working with such an influential writer in the social media world, and we were thrilled to hear she enjoyed her stay. Two of our commercial partners, Smoken’ Bones & 2% Jazz Espresso and Coffee House, provided some tasty treats and delights for her. They will be opening in December 2011, and are both places you will need to visit.

We’re also happy to announce that we have only seven suites left on floors 2 & 3, and our 4th floor suites are the hot commodity of the week already!

Happy Monday!

At the 37th Annual Heritage Awards May 3rd, The Hudson was very proud to be the recipient of The Michael Williams Award. This award was created in 2002 to honour the work of the late Michael Williams and recognizes outstanding rehabilitation in downtown Victoria. Townline Homes is thrilled to see this magnificent building restored to its former glory. This truly will be the heart of the new Hudson District and is the start of great things to come in the neighbourhood.

With the arrival of the warmer part of our spring, it’s a great time to take in some local events. Check out what’s happening in our very own backyard of downtown Victoria and the Old Town District:

1) Visit the Sunday Market in the Square, (formally Government Street Market) now every Sunday – May to Sept 25th in its new location in Centennial Square. This offers something for everyone, arts, crafts, and a farmers market of locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables plus live entertainment. 11 am to 4:30 p.m. It’s only about 5 minutes away from The Hudson!

2) This Victoria Day long weekend don’t miss the Victoria Day Parade, which will head downtown right past The Hudson on Douglas Street May 23rd. Marching bands, floats and clowns will all be part of the fun.

3) Take in another piece of Victoria’s history May 21 – 22 at the 148th annual Victoria Highland Games and Celtic Festival at Topaz Park. Not to be missed events include haggis hurling, sheep dog herding, highland dancing competitions and pipe band performances. Check out www.victoriahighlandgames.com for more info.

Keep an eye on our website, our Facebook and Twitter pages, and our signage for some new, fresh updates. We are so excited about the summer!

Take care and hope to see you soon.

We’ve been told that you could once find Santa in the window of this historic Bay building. Toyland, on the 3rd floor, filled many a dream for local kids. Throughout the building you’ll find reminders of yesteryear. This season, The Hudson will once again light up the neighbourhood. We’re hearing from new residents in the building how much they love their new homes, and how much they love the downtown lifestyle. Here are a few of the downtown happenings to take in over the holidays:

Stop by Centennial Square to see the Square’s giant Sequoia Tree sparkle with more than 25,000 colourful LED lights.

The 19th Annual Festival of Tree’s runs until January 4th at the Fairmont Empress benefiting the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Gingerbread Houses on Display for Habitat, on until January 2 at the Inn at Laurel Point. These gingerbread creations are unique works of art by local chefs. Vote for your favourite and make a donation to Habitat for Humanity.

In the spirit of giving, help out Santa’s Anonymous, now celebrating 32 years of helping kids in Victoria. At selected shops on Government Street stop by and choose a paper bear from the Santa’s Anonymous Tree. Printed on the back of the bear is the child’s name and a requested gift. Register your bear, and later return with the purchased gift. Help to make Christmas brighter for a child this season.

Victoria is a very special place, and we’re proud to be a part of this community.

Happy holidays from the all of us at The Hudson and see you in 2011.

Tracy Menzies
Sales Manager

By Suzanne Morphet

Hudson’s Bay store, abandoned after 80 years, now an address for 152 residences while incorporating ideas on recycling, sustainability.

Four years and $80 million later, the transformation from old Victoria department store to new condominium project is complete.

The Hudson’s Bay Store is now The Hudson. And what was once a four-storey, stateof- the-art shopper’s paradise is now a six-storey, 152-unit, modern residential building with enough retail space on its first floor to recall those vibrant retail years.

The road from retail to residential was about as rough as the weathered exterior on the Georgian-styled building when the Bay abandoned it after 82 years. Old buildings always have surprises — and this one was no exception — but the Vancouver developer who bought the property in 2006, Townline Group of Companies, wasn’t counting on enduring a recession halfway through the reconstruction.

By Andrew A. Duffy

$80 million, 4 years later, downtown has new landmark

Bob Pearce had been waiting for a day like this for four years, and yesterday he beamed as he got to show off the end product of his company’s massive $80- million reinvention and reclamation of the historic Hudson’s Bay Company building.

The vice-president of development for the Townline Group, which bought the historic building in 2006, was clearly relishing the chance to show off the development.

“I get to see this every day, so there really is a sense of accomplishment and it’s quite rewarding to be able to show it off finally,” he said. “It’s especially rewarding when you think what a livable space it is, and what a great place it will be to live.”

The Hudson, a 152-unit residential project built within the 89 year-old walls of the Hudson’s Bay building on Douglas Street is near completion as workers put finishing touches on the units homeowners will take possession of over the next few weeks.

It’s taken four years, $80 million and plenty of patience to get to this point.
